PURPOSE:

The point of view of the author, Paul Eugene du Simitière, was to portray both the American identity and the history into the seal. The author was a collector, a researcher, an artist, and a painter. He was well aware of American geography, geology, archeology, mineralogy, and the numismatics of American history. Therefore, he was able to create a very well formed visual image of the great seal with every aspect to portray American history with passion.

When creating the first proposal of this image, the author had no intended audience to focus on in specific. The image was created for Congress but the audience of it would have been anyone and everyone in the world. The author wanted to represent the peace, hope, and liberty that America has to anyone who might have come across the seal in general.

This image was created because the Congress wanted a great seal for the new nation therefore, many different artists came up with different attempts to design one. The artist behind this specific seal wanted to portray quality aspects of the American identity and tried his best to meet the Congress's guidelines in order to be approved for the official seal of America.
