HISTORICAL SITUATION

Throughout the 18th century, around the time of the Declaration of Independence, it was standard and conventional to have a symbol, such as the Great Seal, to authenticate important documents and make them official with some sort of symbol representing the governing power. The Congress acted to provide this seal for the new nation as different artists came together with ideas in order to symbolize important aspects of America into this sanction.
